(Updated) Man involved in Dorchester shootout with cops pleads not guilty

The shooting took place just after 1 p.m. Saturday on Westville Street.

A Dorchester man pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in court Monday morning for his role in a daytime shootout with police that ended with a Boston cop shot and another man dead.

Christopher Murrain, 26, was charged with assault and battery on a public employee. He was ordered held on $15,000 cash bail for this case, and his bail on two other open cases was revoked, according to the Suffolk district attorney’s office.

Authorities said Murrain was with Darryl Dookhran, 20, of Stoughton at about 1 p.m. on Saturday when Boston police officers from the gang unit approached them on Westville Street. Dookhran, who was out on probation after spending time in jail for an earlier gun conviction, allegedly fled from the cops. Authorities said Murrain stepped in front of the cops and “body blocked” them to give Dookhran a head start.

Dookhran instead turned around and shot at the cops, hitting one of them. The officers returned fire, and Dookhran was fatally shot. The officer suffered an injury that was not life-theatening.

The shooting incident is under investigation by the Suffolk district attorney’s office.
