De Blasio family is moving to Gracie Mansion

For the first time in more than a decade, the first family will live in Gracie Mansion.

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio and his family will move from their Brooklyn home to the official mayoral residence in the Yorkville section of Manhattan.

“It’s a tough decision. Brooklyn is our home and Park Slope is our neighborhood. And we love these places. In many ways, they’ve come to define who we are,” de Blasio, his wife Chirlane McCray, and their children Ciara and Dante said in a statement Wednesday.

The day after the election, de Blasio said the family still hadn’t come to a consensus on a move to Gracie. Among the concerns was Dante’s commute from the residence to his Brooklyn high school.

The family said that “logistical and security concerns” contributed to the final decision, along with “respect and gratitude for the people of New York City.”

“For generations of New Yorkers, Gracie Mansion has been the home of the city’s mayors and their families. It is a place where we celebrate the city and its people, a place where history doesn’t just reside but is experienced by our fellow citizens,” the statement said.

The family will keep their Park Slope home. They said their Brooklyn neighbors can still expect to see them at their favorite spots, including The Purity Diner and Bar Toto.

For 12 years, the 214-year-old building was left vacant by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who chose to reside in his own town house.

The house has been largely used as a museum and occasionally opened up for city functions during Bloomberg’s tenure.

Still, the mayor spent millions of his own cash on renovations to the yellow mansion, which sits in Carl Schurz Park overlooking the East River.
