The president of the Universal Society of Hinduism is urging Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters to pull socks of their shelves that carry an image of Hindu deity Lord Ganesh, calling it “inappropriate.”

Rajan Zed said Lord Ganesh is “meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be wrapped around one’s foot.”

Zed is also urging Urban Outfitters President Richard A. Hayne and CEO Tedford Marlow to issue an apology.

The red and blue Ganesh Sock is sold online as an Urban Outfitters exclusive for $8 a pair, three pair for $20. The company also sells green and black Jesus socks.

Zed said the depiction of Ganesh on footwear is “trivialization” and “disturbing.”

“Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more,” Zed said in a news release. “But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it hurt the followers.”
