Ahmad Abousamra: Former Boston man added to FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list

A French-born fugitive with Boston ties is now one of the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists.

Ahmad Abousamra, who is believed to have grown up in the Boston-area and allegedly conspired with convicted terrorist Tarek Mehanna, was recently added to the infamous list, the FBI’s Boston Division announced Wednesday.

Anyone who helps lead to his capture and return to the U.S. could get a reward of up to $50,000, according to the FBI.

Investigators said they have reason to believe that Abousamra has conspired to provide – and has actually provided – material support to terrorists; conspired to kill in a foreign country; and has made false statements to authorities.

“The FBI’s top priority is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist threats, both foreign and domestic,” said Vincent S. Lisi, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division. “The Most Wanted Terrorists List is another example of the FBI continuing to pursue those individuals accused of criminal conduct. In this case, Ahmad Abousamra advocates violent extremism and boldly promotes violence against United States citizens and military personnel.”

The 32-year-old, who reportedly attended Northeastern University, also has ties to the Detroit, Michigan, area. He is thought to have left the United States in 2006, and may now be living in Aleppo, Syria. He may be with his wife and at least one child, a young daughter, according to the FBI.

Abousamra was indicted after taking multiple trips to Pakistan and Yemen where he allegedly attempted to obtain military training for the purpose of killing American soldiers overseas.

He should be considered armed and dangerous, the agency warned.

On Nov. 5, 2009, a Boston federal court issued an arrest warrant after he was charged with multiple counts of conspiracy.
