The YMCA of Hyde Park has been renamed for one of the neighborhood’s most popular residents: Mayor Thomas Menino.

The beloved Mayor of Boston, who served the city for 20 years before choosing to not run for reelection in November, was presented with the distinguished honor on Thursday.

“The Hyde Park YMCA has been renamed the Thomas M. Menino YMCA in honor of the Mayor’s legendary commitment to the city as a whole and his hometown in particular,” the YMCA said in a statement. “Long before Thomas Menino was the successful five-term mayor of Boston, he was just another Hyde Park Y kid. In his youth, Mayor Menino spent his summers learning how to swim, playing sports and making bracelets and key chains out of gimp at his neighborhood Y.”

A crowd of neighborhood residents, political bigwigs, and children in Santa hats cheered Menino on, as he spoke about how touched he was to receive the honor.

Menino will join the Boston University faculty in February to help lead an initiative that will define the politics and services, such as education, health care, transportation, and technology needed for cities to thrive as economic hubs in the 21st century, according to the university.
