With Christmas over, bask in the season of giving for a little longer by returning your holiday tree to the cycle of nature.

Philadelphia’s holiday recycling program includes special procedures for Christmas tree recycling.

If you can hold on to your Christmas tree until Jan. 6, it can be disposed of safely and recycled, going into wood-chips, compost and mulch to be spread around city parks.

All Christmas trees left on the street will be treated as trash and picked up on regular trash collection days.

But trees brought to recycling centers will be ground up for use by the city’s department of Parks and Recreation.

The city’s Christmas tree recycling program will run from Jan. 6 to Jan. 18, 2014.

The service is not for use by commercial entities.

While recycling your Christmas tree, don’t forget to also recycle other remnants of the holidays, such as wrapping paper, tissue paper and  gift boxes.
