Where to see First Night fireworks in Boston on New Year’s Eve

Whether you want to go out or celebrate at home, we have you covered.

In Boston, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with First Night, fanfare and not one but two fireworks displays.

The annual First Night Boston celebration includes two fireworks displays in Boston.

The first show takes place on the Boston Common at 7 p.m. — a little earlier for the young ones who can’t quite make it to midnight. The 10-minute display takes place at midnight Greenwich Mean Time near the baseball field on the Boston Common near Charles and Boylston streets.

For those who can stay up until midnight, the Boston Harbor will be illuminated with a fireworks display to ring in the first minutes of 2014. The display is being produced by Boston 4 Productions and Atlas PyroVision Productions, the same partnership that produces the annual July 4 fireworks near the Esplanade.

Like all outdoor events on First Night, the fireworks displays are free. A $10 button must be purchased to attend the dozens of indoor events taking place elsewhere in Boston on Tuesday. The city also announced the debut of an app for those looking for more information on First Night.

Additionally, city officials on Monday announced road closures and urged people to use public transportation if they are coming into the city for First Night. The event has attracted about 1 million people in previous years.

The MBTA will be free after 8 p.m. and service will be extended until about 2 a.m.

Boston police interim Commissioner William Evans also said on Monday that if people see something suspicious or unusual on First Night to say something to police.

First Night Boston was in doubt earlier this year after the nonprofit that has put it on for decades ceased to exist. Mayor Thomas Menino stepped in, and the Highland Street Foundation, as well as corporate partners, joined together to make sure First Night continued.
