The first snowstorm of the year caused schools to close, highways to shut down and hundred of flights to be canceled.

JFK Airport was closed early Friday morning and was expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Hundreds of flights have been canceled at all three of New York’s major airports.

Highways, including the Long Island Expressway and I-84 in New York, are expected to reopen at 8 a.m. after they were closed overnight.

All New York City schools are closed Friday, the city’s Department of Education announced.

Express service on subways is expected to remain suspended this morning until trains are able to be moved off the express tracks, where they were stored overnight.

Metro-North and Long Island Railroad trains are operating on a Saturday schedule on Friday.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. for New York City, Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties as well as parts of New Jersey.

New Yorkers can use PlowNYC to track the snow plowing progress in their neighborhoods.
