Federal prosecutors decided to retry charter school founder Dorothy June Brown on fraud charges just minutes after a jury acquitted her of six charges and deadlocked on 54 others today.

“We will be retrying the case,” said Patty Hartman, spokeswoman for the office of U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Zane Memeger.

Brown, who founded Ad Prima, Laboratory, and Planet Abacus charter schools, is charged with embezzling $6.7 million from the schools by collecting separate six-figure salaries from all of her schools.

Jurors found Brown not guilty of four wire fraud charges related to Agora Cyber Charter, one charge of wire fraud related to Laboratory, and one charge of witness intimidation.

Jurors completely acquitted two of Brown’s co-defendants, Michael A. Slade Jr., a former CEO at Laboratory, and Courteney L. Knight, a former CEO of Ad Prima, just before Christmas.

But a week after returning from their three-week holiday break, they told U.S. District Judge Barclay Surrick that they were acquitting Brown on six charges and were hopelessly deadlocked on the 54 others.
