Transit Police are investigating after two historic MTA train cars were discovered defaced today at Boylston Station, Universal Hub reported this afternoon.

Transit Police Lt. Richard Sullivan said that investigators were following some potential leads in the case.

“Unfortunately, one car was extensively defaced, and another was not as badly tagged,” he said, adding that the T was in the process of having the antique trains cleaned.

The vandalism took place sometime between 1 a.m .and 5 a.m., Sullivan said. Boylston Station is equipped with surveillance cameras, however police would not say whether the vandalism was captured on video.

Photographs taken by UHub photographer show large, white letters written across one of the trains. Suspects would face  vandalism charges, Sullivan said.

There was no estimate available as to how much the clean up would cost. Each year graffiti and other forms of vandalism committed on MBTA property costs about $1 million to remove, according to Transit Police.

In 2012, the MBTA said it would devote resources to cracking down on graffiti artists.

“To fight back against these criminal and costly acts the Transit Police dedicate resources for identifying, prosecuting and in some instances obtaining court ordered restitution from individuals responsible for such behavior against the MBTA,” Transit Police said in a statement.
