Fans had to wait up to two hours to leave MetLife Stadium after the Super Bowl on Sunday as the New Jersey transit authority reported record-setting ridership.

After the Seahawks beat the Broncos 43-8 shortly before 10 p.m., riders flooded New Jersey’s transit system, with officials urging fans to stay in the stadium because of congestion.

More than 33,000 riders took shuttle trains in the three hours after the game, according to NJ Transit, which noted that fans were transported successfully and safely.

The shuttle service, Meadowlands Rail, can move 12,000 fans an hour, according to the rail.

Buses were eventually dispatched to take more than 1,100 would-be train riders to the Port Authority in Manhattan.

Before the Super Bowl, officials encouraged fans to use mass transit to get to the big game, and many heeded that call. Nearly 28,000 rode rails from nearby Secaucus Junction to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The previous record for NJ Transit riders was set in 2009, when more than 22,000 fans used the rail for a U2 concert.
