Government Center station to close for two years beginning in March

The MBTA officially announced that starting March 22, it will shut down the bustling Government Center station for a two-year renovation.

T officials said crews will “upgrade the station into a fully accessible, safer, modern, more comfortable facility” and will combine improvements to the Green Line station, Blue Line station, and Cambridge Street/Government Center Plaza.

The Green and Blue Line stations include a new head house structure at the main entrance and raised platforms for more accessible boarding of the Green Line low-floor trains, as well as new elevators, escalators, LED signage and an expanded fare collection area, among other improvements.

Passengers traveling through both the Green and Blue line platforms can expect more vendor retailers, officials said.

Because both Blue and Green Line trains will pass through Government Center Station without stopping, the T is recommending that commuters anticipate an additional 10 to 15 minutes of travel time.

The T also recommended that Green Line customers desiring access to the Blue Line travel to Haymarket Station and transfer to the Orange Line toward Forest Hills (southbound). Customers should transfer to the Orange Line at State Street Station for Blue Line connections.

Blue Line customers seeking access to the Green Line should travel to State Street, transfer to the Orange Line toward Oak Grove (northbound), then transfer at Haymarket Station for Green Line connections.

More T tips for affected passengers:

Customers looking to travel outside the MBTA or use Hubway are dealing with a “minimal” distance between State Street and Downtown Crossing / State Street and Park Street.

Beware: Customers who exit and re-enter the system will be charged again if they do not have an unlimited weekly or monthly pass.

During the closure, the last downtown Green Line stop will generally be the following for each branch:

• B Line (Boston College) will end at Park Street
• C Line (Cleveland Circle) will end at North Station
• D Line (Riverside) will end at Park Street during rush hours, and North Station at other times
• E Line will end at Lechmere
