A kitten is recovering at an Ashland animal hospital after being thrown from a car traveling along Route 9 west of Boston on Monday.

The Family Pet Hospital is caring for the 9-week-old female kitten, hospital staff said. Her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, but she did suffer road rash, a leg injury and a bloody nose.

A man brought the kitten to the hospital on Monday and said he saw it being hurled from a black BMW with California license plates, the hospital said.

It was not immediately clear where on Route 9 the incident occurred.

“She is very scared. We’re trying to keep her as quiet and comfortable and calm as possible,” said Jenn DiRosario, a hospital staff member. “She is eating for us … She’s a lot better than she was [on Monday].”

DiRosario said the hospital has received numerous inquiries about adopting the kitten, but that the animal is not ready for adoption. The hospital already has a list of potential adopters, she said, adding that people who are interested in adopting a cat can also check with their local shelter.

“Even though this is kind of getting a lot of publicity, there are still a lot of cats and kittens at your local shelter who may not have had an extreme situation like this, but who still need a loving home and care,” she said.
