Elderly couple dies in early morning fire in Methuen
An early morning fire in Methuen killed an elderly couple and their dog on Wednesday.
The victims are a man and a woman in their 70′s, police told the Lawrence Eagle Tribune. Their identities have not been released.
Police arrived at the scene on Buttonwood Drive shortly after 3 a.m., and discovered the home completely ravaged by flames.
As of 7 a.m., one body had been removed from the home, while another was still inside.
Investigators from Methuen fire and police departments told WBZ that while the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, they do believe it started in the garage area.
There were no working smoke detectors at the home, according to the preliminary investigation.
Volunteers from the Red Cross also headed to the scene, where additional houses in the neighborhood were evacuated as a safety precaution.
