One dead, several injured in Ewing, N.J., explosion
One person is dead and several utility workers were injured this afternoon after a gas explosion in a Mercer County, N.J., condominium complex.
One unit was destroyed on Crockett Lane in Ewing while several others were damaged by fire.
Two employees for private utility contractor Henkels & McCoy struck a gas line as they were working on the complex. They called in PSE&G for assistance.
Both private contractors and five PSE&G workers were injured in the explosion, reports say, and taken to area hospitals. Investigators said they do not know what caused the explosion.
According to NJ.com, a hospital spokesman said the injuries ranged from a broken leg to embedded shrapnel. Officials said the deceased was a resident.
The explosion happened shortly before 1 p.m. Ewing is about 10 miles from Trenton.
Ewing Township Police Lt. Ron Lunetta described the scene as “pretty horrific.”
