Queens man arrested in ATV hit-and-run of police officer in Brooklyn: NYPD

Police said a Queens man was arrested Friday in the ATV hit-and-run of an officer last weekend in Brooklyn.

Kenny Ortiz, 31, was charged with attempted murder and other offenses after police said he struck an officer with a yellow Yamaha ATV he was driving in East New York around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

It is illegal to drive all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes in the city and police said the ATV was originally stopped by officers for driving erratically. As the cops approached the vehicle, the ATV sped away, striking one officer and dragging him nearly 200 feet before running over his leg.

The officer suffered a broken vertebrae, nose and several cuts and bruises, police said.

Cops initially arrested a 23-year-old in connection with the assault, but he was later charged for driving another ATV recklessly nearby. Police released a sketch of a suspect wearing a black helmet wreathed in skulls Tuesday.

Ortiz lives in Ozone Park, Queens, less than two miles from where police said he ran over the officer near Pitkin and Lincoln Avenues in Brooklyn.

He was charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault, attempted aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, resisting arrest, reckless driving, operating an unregistered motorcycle and driving a motor vehicle on a sidewalk, police said Friday.

It was not immediately clear if Ortiz had an attorney.
