On Pennsylvania roadways, St. Patrick’s Day is as deadly as New Year’s when it comes to car crashes, according to data released today from PennDot.

Thirty-four percent of vehicle fatalities on St. Patrick’s Day — this year, Monday — are connected to drunken driving.

In 2012, there were three fatalities on Pennsylvania roads on St. Patrick’s Day — the same number of fatalities as there was on New Year’s Eve. However, Labor Day is number one is alcohol-related deaths in the commonwealth.

Over a five-year span, from 2008 to 2012, there have been 209 alcohol-related crashes on St. Patrick’s Day in Pennsylvania, with eight deaths.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that two of five people killed in the country in car crashes during the st. Patricks’ Day holiday from 2006 to 2011 have involved a drunken driver.
