Benzino nephew, alleged shooter denied bail
The 36-year-old nephew of hip-hop and reality television star Benzino was ordered held without bail during a dangerousness hearing Wednesday, despite claims that the Randolph resident acted in self-defense.
Gai Scott is accused of shooting his uncle, whose real name is Raymond Scott, during a funeral procession Saturday on Route 3 in Duxbury.
Benzino, 48, appears in the VH1 series “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta.” The funeral service was for his mother, Mary Scott.
According to a police report filed in Plymouth District Court, Scott told investigators his uncle pulled up beside him, rolled down his window, asked, “You got a problem with me?” then threatened to kill him.
Scott claimed he fired shots after he saw Benzino pull a gun, the report said. On Monday he pleaded not-guilty to a charge of armed assault with intent to murder.
The Plymouth District Attorney’s Office said there was no evidence that Benzino was armed at the time of the shooting, and that he had attempted to avoid family members due to tensions.
Benzino was released Monday from South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where he was treated for gunshot wounds in his arm and back.
Of the shooting, Benzino told TheNEHipHop.com “I’m more embarrassed than anything else.” He has since returned to Atlanta.
A probable cause hearing is scheduled for April 25th.
