Brighton women indicted in scam involving care of elderly woman’s cat
A pair of Brighton women were due in Suffolk Superior Court Thursday morning after being indicted for allegedly stealing from an elderly woman whose trust they gained while caring for her cat.
Randi Berkowitz, 58, and Patricia DiGiacomo, 63, were charged in a 63-count indictment for the alleged thefts from the elderly woman as well as lying to judges in civil proceedings and filing a false insurance, the Suffolk district attorney’s office said.
The indictments are the result of an investigation into doctor shopping and identity fraud case for which both women were charged in 2012, prosecutors said.
That investigation led investigators to the alleged scam involving the elderly woman in which Berkowitz and DiGiacomo cared for her cat as leverage that allowed them to obtain power of attorney and other legal authority over her finances and her home, according to the district attorney’s office.
