First month of MBTA late-night weekend service nets 72,057 rides

The ridership numbers are in following the first month of late-night weekend MBTA service.

According to transit officials, 72,057 people traveled on MBTA subways during late-night weekend hours since a new pilot program launched in late March.

“The MBTA is pleased to see that tens of thousands of people took advantage of the subway’s extended service hours during the first month of the year-long pilot program,” MBTA Spokesman Joe Pesaturo said. “The MBTA will continue to closely monitor ridership patterns and trends over the next 48 weekends of the pilot program.”

Under the program, the last trains depart downtown stations at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights.

Some 15,322 transit riders opted to ride the subway this past weekend.

Transit officials said 23,793 came through the MBTA’s core stations in the first four weekends of the pilot. The busiest subway lines were the Green and Red, netting 17,915 and 16,911 rides respectively. The Orange line pulled in 9,627 rides, and the Blue saw 3,811.

No ridership projections were made prior to the start of the one-year pilot program, Pesaturo said.

“The MBTA will continue to collect data over the next eleven months, and examine the ridership trends and patterns that develop and emerge,” he said.
