A state transportation board approved on Wednesday a fare increase to the price of riding the MBTA.

The fare hike, which will take effect in July, was approved during Wednesday’s meeting of the MassDOT board, according to the Globe.

Transit officials detailed plans to increase the cost of riding the public transit system in March.

The 5 percent fare hike means that subway trips will now cost $2.10, up a dime from current prices. Bus trips will also increase a dime to $1.60, monthly LinkPasses will increase $5 to $75 and Commuter Rail and ferry single ride trips will increase between 25 cents and 50 cents each.

Also on Wednesday, the MassDOT board approved the purchase of 40 new buses and a contract to build 24 new Green Line cars. The new buses will allow the MBTA to retire older buses purchased in 1994 and 1995. They are expected to be in service by February.

CAF USA, Inc., will build the 24 new cars for $118 million. Half of the funding will come from a federal grant and the cars are expected to be delivered between the end of 2017 and the end of 2018.
