We all know living in a city is expensive. How does the average person make it work? Our Second Shift series features people taking on more than one job to make ends meet. This week, meet Amanda, who works three part-time jobs just for the pure joy of it. If you want to be featured, email emily.laurence@metro.us.

Name: Amanda Young
Age: 38
Residency: Kensington, Brooklyn, New York
Lives with: Her partner
Number of jobs: 3

What is your schedule like working three part-time jobs?

My first job is as a social worker; I work three days a week at a middle school. Second, I teach a range of fitness classes at Equinox, Monday through Friday at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., and then again at night at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Third, I work as a training leader for Shape Up New York, which provides free fitness classes in all five boroughs. I run a training program that helps people become fitness leaders within their communities. Those classes are on Thursday nights, Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

It seems like fitness is your main passion.

Honestly, social work and fitness are both equally my passion. It just worked out that I was able to have this balance.

Are you working all three jobs for the money or are any of them more passion driven?

They’re honestly passion driven. I live by that overused saying that when you do what you love it never feels like work. I’ve always been interested in helping others achieve their physical, mental and spiritual goals, and both careers allow me to fulfill my own personal goal of helping others.

Your jobs really do seem like a good balance.

It’s very easy to burn out in both. Physically, your body can shut down, but emotionally social work can be very difficult. Because my jobs are so different from each other, I don’t feel overworked or overwhelmed. I happened to pick two careers that inspire me. I just love going to work.

How does your partner feel about you working so many jobs?

I was already working in both fields when he met me 11 years ago, so he accepts it. He’s very understanding. He knows I love what I do and could never give up either part of myself. He knows it makes me happy, so he’s very supportive of it. Sundays are our rest day, our reconnection day.
