Metropolitik: Barack Obama guilty of being a politician

Slow news season?

We’ve officially reached that time in the 2012 presidential campaign when the most interesting story of the day either involves the president being overheard saying something obvious but gaffeish to a Russian head of state, or the release of a mysterious video from failed Republican candidate Herman Cain that includes a rabbit being shot to bits and a creepy girl asking whether anyone is confused.
With nothing substantial to discuss, we therefore succumb instead to the insubstantial.

First up:?Obama and the hot mic. The president was overheard telling Russian President Dmitry Medvedev yesterday that he needed “space” and “time” to get to a missile defense system that has been bedeviling relations between the two countries for some time.

“On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him [Putin] to give me space,” Obama said. “This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.”

Many people — overwhelmingly on one side of the aisle, but then, that’s the way these things go — are disturbed that a U.S. president would use practical considerations in determining the timing of legislative focus. Some have ratcheted up the rhetoric even higher to allege that Obama is merely waiting for term two to unleash his master plans for America’s destruction.

But is anyone really surprised to learn that presidents hold secret discussions with other world leaders, or that they weigh policy goals with political realities? It seems Obama has waded into a similar puddle as a Romney adviser did last week, when he gave voice to another political truism: that politicians tack to the center in a general election. (For what it’s worth, we also deemed Etch-a-Sketch-gate unworthy of our attention, and not only because we’re sick to tears of the “-gate” construction.)

Oh, and Herman Cain? Yeah, don’t worry about him.
