9/11 ceremony schedule

Inside the National September 11 Memorial plaza.

Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks that claimed more than 2,700 American lives.

Relatives of victims of the 2001 and 1993 attacks have been invited to attend a commemoration ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial plaza at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan, beginning at 8:39 a.m.

The program will begin with music by bagpipers and drummers and the National Anthem performed by the Young People’s Chorus of New York City.

At 8:46 a.m., the first moment of silence will be held to mark AA Flight 11 striking the North Tower.

Moments of silence will continue throughout the morning in observance of the second plane hitting the South Tower, the plane that struck the Pentagon, the flight that went down in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as well as when each tower fell.

Once again this year, each victim’s name will be read aloud. This is the first anniversary, however, where politicians will not be speaking during the program.

The ceremony is expected to conclude at 12:30 p.m.
