President Barack Obama addressed the nation and promised justice Monday night after three people were killed at the Boston Marathon.

“The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight,” the president said.

Obama was briefed by the FBI and his Homeland Security team after the blasts. He also spoke with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and pledged to provide any federal resources.

“On days like this, there are no Republicans or Democrats, but Americans united in their concern,” he said.

The president did not characterize the explosions as terrorism, but a White House official later said the situation was being handled as “an act of terror.”

“We still do not know who did this or why. People should not jump to conclusions before we know the facts,” Obama said. “Make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this. We will find out who did this and why they did this. Any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.”

The president noted that Monday was Patriot’s Day, a holiday that “celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation.”

“Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people,” Obama continued. “I’m supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.”
