The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released its latest cosmetic and reconstructive surgery statistics today, and while many of the results are predictable, the fact that First Lady Michelle Obama was cited was unexpected.

One of the interesting trends is that doctors noticed a significant increase in upper-arm lifts, also known as brachioplasties. The procedures involve an incision from the armpit to the elbow to remove extra fat and skin. Brachioplasties has increated 4,378 percent since 2000.

Doctors said they are not sure why the procedure is so popular these days, but many patients cite Michelle Obama’s arms when discussing the procedure with their doctors.

The L.A. Times reports:

“In a statement, the ASPS said that doctors didn’t point to a single reason for the increase, but took note of poll data indicating that women “are paying closer attention to the arms of female celebrities” including Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Kelly Ripa. The most-admired arms of all? Those of First Lady Michelle Obama.”

According the results, Americans underwent 1.6 million cosmetic surgeries such as face lifts, liposuction and rhinoplasty. Thirteen million Americans underwent minimally invasive procedures such as Botox, and 5.6 million underwent reconstructive procedures such as scar revision.

In total, $11 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures in the United States alone.

For the seventh year in a row, breast augmentation was the most popular form of cosmetic surgery. The majority of people that underwent a cosmetic procedure were 40 to 54 years old and 91 percent were women.
