Chin up, America: Only 1 in 3 are very happy

Most Americans are just putting on a brave face, according to a new study.
Most Americans are just putting on a brave face, according to a new study.

Are you and the people around you genuinely happy?

According to a recent Harris poll, only 33 percent of Americans reported that they are very happy.

The online poll of 2,345 adults in the United Stated conducted last month asked a series of questions to determine if Americans are satisfied with life.

Thirty-three percent of Americans said they were very happy. This was the same percentage of people who reported being very happy in 2011. The percentage is down from 35 percent who reported being very happy in 2008 and 2009 – the start of the economic recession.

“Our happiness index offers insight into what’s on the minds of Americans today and is a reflection of the state of affairs in our country,” Regina Corso, senior vice president of the Harris Poll said in a statement. “While the attitudes on the economy may be improving, we’re seeing that this is not translating into an improvement in overall happiness. For certain groups, such as minorities, recent graduates and the disabled, they are actually subsegments of the American populations where ‘happiness’ has trended downward in the last couple years.”

According to the poll, as Americans get older, they also get happier, so there’s that to look forward to. The survey also found a decline in optimism. Only 67 percent of those polled said they were optimistic about the future. That’s down from 75 percent in 2011. The global average for optimism levels is 89 percent.

Now, let’s see a smile, America.
