LISTEN: First lady Michelle becomes second Obama to get heckled, threatens to walk out of event

Michelle Obama handled her heckler with less calm than her husband.

It was Michelle Obama’s turn to get a taste of what it’s like to be heckled at an event after her husband, President Barack Obama, recently had the same experience.

The first lady was speaking at a Democratic Party fundraiser in Northwest Washington on Tuesday night, when outspoken LGBT activist Ellen Sturtz interrupted her to demand the president sign an anti-discrimination order.

“One of the things I don’t do well with is this,” the first lady is heard saying in an audio recording of the event, becoming obviously aggravated by the interruption.

“Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice,” she threatened, reportedly moving down from the lectern and directly approaching Sturtz.

An audience member reportedly told Sturtz she needed to go; she was escorted out, and the fundraiser continued with the first lady present.

This incident comes just two weeks after President Obama was repeatedly interrupted by activist Medea Benjamin during a televised press conference. Obama, however, kept his cool a little better (and didn’t threaten to walk out), calmly responding, “Part of free speech is you being able to speak, but also me being able to speak. And you listening.”

After letting Benjamin speak for another minute, Obama responded, “That woman’s voice is worth listening to,” before continuing with his remarks.

Here’s the audio recording of Michelle Obama’s heated confrontation with Sturtz.
