What would you unexpectedly came across a bear? Run? Hide? You probably wouldn’t feed it, right?

Last Saturday, Jesus Mabalot came across this moment in Alaska. The 38-year-old Anchorage resident went to his church’s picnic at a state park campground where he might have had one too many drinks. He reportedly drank throughout the afternoon and then stuffed his backpack with barbecue before leaving.

While biking down a road near the campsite, he encountered a black bear.

“I guess he had a bit too much to drink, so he got on his bike and took a ride down the road,” Alaska Department of Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh told ABC News. “He had meat in his day pack when he ran into a bear.”

Rather than run in the opposite direction or even hide, Mabalot decided to befriend the bear.

“He threw some meat to the bear, and the bear ate it. He threw another chunk, and the bear ate it and attacked him,” Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said. “It was really brief and really quick.”

Mabalot was found later that afternoon bloodied, bruised and presumably still drunk washing himself off in a nearby river. He was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital.

While officials say Mabalot is “lucky to be alive” he was fined $310 for feeding wildlife.
