Capitol Hill was on lockdown after a car chase and shooting, but it has since been lifted.

A woman driving a black Infinity sedan hit a security barrier near the White House and drove down Pennsylvania Avenue toward Capitol Hill as police chased her; Cathy Lenier, Metropolitan Police Chief, confirmed that there were shots in at least two locations. The woman had a little girl with her and is believed to be a Connecticut resident, according to CNN. Capitol Police would not give any details on the suspect. Capitol Police said in a press conference that the girl was a one-year-old baby and an officer took the child to the hospital.

The chase ended in a standoff at the Senate Hart Building where police shot her. Capitol Police confirmed that the suspect has been pronounced dead. Two officers were injured during the incident: one from Secret Service and one from the Capitol.

Police stopped traffic and issued a “Shelter in Place” order. They told staffers over the Capitol speaker system to stay inside their offices and buildings.

Capitol Police wrote in an e-mail alert: “Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring staff in all Senate Office Buildings to immediately shelter in place. Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows. Take annunciators, emergency supply kits and escape hoods; and move to your office’s assigned shelter in place location or the innermost part of the office away from external doors or window.”

Police said this was an isolated incident: Lenier said she does not believe it was an act of terrorism.
