A Connecticut couple was arrested and charged with child abuse after they allegedly put an electric dog collar on a little girl, reports NBC Connecticut.

Eduardo Montanez of Danbury, Conn. allegedly put an electric dog collar on his 9-year-old stepdaughter for receiving unsatisfactory marks in school. His daughter told her teacher that Montanez ordered her to bark like a dog so she would receive an electric shock. She said that her mother Paula was present during the incident but did not stop her husband. School employees contacted authorities and the couple was arrested on Tuesday.

Montanez, 43, was charged with third-degree assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor and cruelty to a person. He was in court on Wednesday with bond set at $250,000. His wife, Paula, 34, was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, conspiracy to commit third-degree assault and conspiracy to commit cruelty to a person with a bond of $200,000.

The Montanez’s 9-year-old daughter is currently in state custody. If Paula Montanez makes bail, she has an order not to contact her thre children.
