Is the ‘bikini bridge’ the new ‘thigh gap’? Probably not

The “bikini bridge” has exploded on social media as 2014′s answer to the “thigh gap.” The thigh gap, which was previously a well-known phenomenon in the image industry, came into the mainstream last year after myriad blogs, Tumblrs and Pinterest boards posted aspirational photos touting the “gap” as a highly desirable mark of beauty.

One Twitter user even made an account dedicated to model Cara Delevingne’s thigh gap, while there are many more that analyze whether or not certain models and actresses have a thigh gap – those who don’t are labeled “fat.”

But in the past few days, a new phenomenon has seemingly emerged: the “bikini bridge.” The bikini bridge refers to when a bikini bottom suspends across a woman’s hipbones, creating a bridge with space underneath. Twitter users and media outlets are exploding over the new “thigh gap,” but a closer look by the Daily Dot reveals that the “bridge” has questionable origins.

This time, it’s not the modeling industry or teenagers with eating disorders who have created the “bridge” – 4chan users are responsible for the spam attack. Leaders on the thread called on users to help make the “bikini bridge” the “next big thing,” and asked them to share “pro-ana”-esque photos of bikini bridges on social media in order to create buzz, according to the Daily Dot (Metro was unable to find the original post).

4chan users did acknowledge that they were behind the operation, however, with one user writing, “So it looks like that operation Bikini Bridge has succeeded…what amazes the most is that it made it to my country’s news, even though I doubt the operation included this shithole of a country … Well played.”
