Don’t need religion to be good
Re: ‘Have a little faith in religion’ (Metro, June 19)
The comments of letter writers Annie Ferris and Linda Whittaker are both versions of the “religion is good because it is useful” argument.
The problem with this argument is that the effect of any particular belief system tells us nothing about whether that belief system is true.
Secondly, there are many excellent reasons available for behaving morally, doing good to others and demonstrating compassion.
None of these reasons require that we stop being skeptical or rational and place faith in Iron Age mythologies.
