Re: ‘Chimp rights case reaches court’ (Metro, Nov. 5)
If you were doing a story about rabbits and chose for your headline a reference to mice, people would think you were either ignorant or stupid. And yet in an article about chimpanzees, you opened with a reference to “monkeying around,” implying the chimps are monkeys (newsflash: they are apes).
A mouse is much closer from an evolutionary standpoint to a rabbit than a monkey is to an ape (apes are much closer to humans than to lower primates). As a journalistic endeavor, it would seem that your mandate should be to inform, not to promote and perpetuate misconceptions.
