Letter: The world’s unstable, but energy supply need not be
Considering presently increasing tensions between Russia and the U.S., we need to be sure there is no threat against the oil we need to import. Venezuela is a source of heavy crude oil but is also politically close to Cuba, which was recently visited by a Russian ship, and Venezuela is not friendly to the U.S.
Another source of crude for the U.S. would be Canada via the Keystone pipeline — if President Obama could overcome the paralysis that is preventing him from going forward with allowing a permit for that project. His own State Department has said that studies show the pipeline would not cause any overall increase in greenhouse gases. Business and labor favor the project.
Mr. President, which is more important to you: Energy security for the United States of America or delaying a decision for purely political reasons?
