An up-close look at the past on Boston Common

The history buffs of the future were treated with a treasure trove of relics and lessons from the past on Monday, as nearlya thousand elementary school students converged on Boston Common for the seventh-annual"Making History" day.

Kids got to play Colonial-era games, meet costumed soldiers transported into the future, stick their heads through a stockade,and even spend some face-time with Boston City ArchaeologistJoe Bagley (who recently worked atan impromptu dig of an old shipwreck discovered in the Seaport).

There was also plenty of oohing and aahingas some historiccannonsblasted nearbyon the Common, as part oftheAncient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts' annual ceremony.
