The history buffs of the future were treated with a treasure trove of relics and lessons from the past on Monday, as nearly a thousand elementary school students converged on Boston Common for the seventh-annual "Making History" day.

Kids got to play Colonial-era games, meet costumed soldiers transported into the future, stick their heads through a stockade, and even spend some face-time with Boston City Archaeologist Joe Bagley (who recently worked at an impromptu dig of an old shipwreck discovered in the Seaport).

There was also plenty of oohing and aahing as some historic cannons blasted nearby on the Common, as part of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts' annual ceremony.
