Shorefront memorials honor ‘Baby Doe’ as search continues

Lying on the shore of Boston Harbor, just a few steps from a public path that wraps around a wastewater treatment plant, are flowers wedged between rocks, stuffed animals, photos of a young girl and stones arranged in letters: “God Bless.”

The simple blessings on the Deer Island are a tribute to the nameless young girl found dead on Deer Island one month ago Saturday. The heartbreaking hunt for her identity has continued since then, with investigators chasing tip after tip but getting no closer to resolution.

The search for the toddler, who has been dubbed “Baby Doe,” has gripped the nation. Call-outs online, including a digital rendering of how she might have looked, have reached millions. Her face has been printed on highway billboards, on posters in shop windows and on pieces of paper taped to utility poles, slowly wearing in the weather and wind. Written in several languages, the plea is the same: Come forward, and tell us who she is.

The shoreline memorial is one of many acts of compassion that have followed the tragic discovery. Offers have been coming in statewide to pay for funeral services, police have said, among them someone who offered to bury the girl on their land, beneath a shady tree.

For now, her body is being kept at the state medical examiner’s office, nameless.

Investigators were trying new methods in their search for leads.

Police now offer an anonymous text-to-tip system, which routes information through a third party, so authorities can’t track tipsters’ information. Anyone with information can text the word GIRL, followed by their tip to 67283.

Callers can reach a 24-hour tip hotline at 617-396-5655.

The girl is described as approximately four years old, white or Hispanic, with brown hair and brown eyes, standing three feet tall, weighing roughly 30 pounds and wearing earrings.
