Playing the Field: Luis Suarez bites Branislav Ivanovic

It’s not that uncommon for a person in a combat sport to lose their cool and bite someone.

Yes, we all remember Mike Tyson biting off a chunk of Evander Holyfield’s ear and being disqualified. By the way, the fact that happened 16 years ago (June 28, 1997) makes me feel very old.

But I can honestly say I’ve never heard of a soccer player biting someone on the pitch. Headbutting, sure, but not biting. That is, until Liverpool’s Luis Suarez took a chunk out of Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in Saturday’s Premier League contest.

Suarez and Ivanovic were jostling for position in the box just into the 66th minute of a 2-1 Chelsea lead when Suarez straight up bit him on the arm. Of course, the referee missed it entirely and Suarez calmly walked away as if he did nothing while Ivanovic showed the ref the bite marks on his arm.

While I didn’t realize it, apparently Suarez has a history of biting opponents. He bit Otman Bakkal back into 2010 and was suspended for seven games.

At least that time it happened during a little scrum though. It was still frighteningly vampire-esque though.

I don’t know how long he’ll be suspended for this one, but let’s start with the rest of the season.
