The Phillies bullpen was supposed to be better this year.

For the most part, it has been better.

Just not Wednesday night, as the Phils dropped another game at Citizens Bank Park to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3.

Relievers Antonio Bastardo and Mike Adams could not hold onto the two-run lead the Phillies (9-13) held when starter Roy Halladay left after six strong innings.

Bastardo surrendered a solo home run to Pittsburgh’s Pedro Alvarez in the seventh and Adams, brought in from Texas as a free agent by general manager Ruben Amaro to solidify the back end of the Phils’ bullpen, was unable to record a single out in allowing the go-ahead run to score in the eighth inning.

The Phils led the game heading into the seventh by a score of 3-1.Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hit solo home runs for the Phillies, who also scored on an RBI single by Kevin Fransden in the bottom of the sixth.

Halladay allowed just one hit while walking two over six innings. He had eight strikeouts.

Starling Marte, Travis Snider and Brandon Inge also hit home runs for Pittsburgh.

The Phillies will try for a series split as the four-game set with Pittsburgh (12-9) wraps up today with a 1:05 game.
