Morales struggles, Red Sox bats quiet in 9-5 loss to Angels

BOSTON — Not getting timely hitting and poor relief pitching did the Red Sox in as they fell to the Angels 9-5 in Game 1 of a day-night double header Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park.

Red Sox starter Felix Doubront went six innings allowing three runs on six hits and struck out four while walking two. He allowed one run in the second followed by two in the third. He seemed to get stronger as the game went along as he had three of his strikeouts in the fourth and the fifth innings.

Franklin Morales came in to relive Doubront for the seventh where he allowed four runs, including four walks and two coming with the bases loaded, only recording two outs. Clayton Mortensen allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief, then Andrew Miller came in allowing the two inherited runners to score before recording the final two outs in the ninth.

“Obviously we saw what happened in the seventh inning, we lost the strike zone as we got deeper into it and that ended up being the difference in today’s game,” said manager John Farrell. “I think anytime you walk that number of guys you’re asking for trouble.”

Offensively, the Sox were led by Mike Carp who went 3-for-5 with a home run, his fifth of the year and two RBIs. Daniel Nava had three hits and an RBI in the loss, while Dustin Pedroia extended his hit streak to 11 games with a two-hit performance. The Red Sox trailed 9-2, before scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth.

The teams will play Game 2 of their doubleheader tonight (7:10, FOX) where Clay Buchholz will look to improve to 9-0 as he goes up against C.J. Wilson.

What they’ll be saying: The Sox scoring the three runs in the ninth inning despite trailing 9-2 shows just how resilient the team is and their ability to never give up in any particular game, but as is the case in almost every loss this season it can be pointed at the teams’ inability to get the timely hit. They left 14 runners on base and finished going 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position … What gets lost in it all, despite suffering the loss, Doubront pitched very well and seems to have put his struggles to begin the year behind him. Today was his fourth straight start of pitching six innings and prior to today he allowed two earned runs or less in all three of those starts before allowing three today. Walks do continue to be an issue for him and prohibit him from going deep into games. He had two today, but has combined for 15 in his last five outings.
