Red Sox bats erupt in rout of Rockies

BOSTON — In the first game of a brief two-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Fenway Park, the Red Sox rolled to an 11-4 win Tuesday night. This is the Rockies’ first trip to Fenway since the 2007 World Series.

The Red Sox were all over Rockies starter Juan Nicasio as they scored seven times in the first three innings. They scored two in the first and third, while plating three in the second. All three runs in the second came with two outs as Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz hit back-to-back-to-back doubles and then Mike Napoli followed with a single. The Sox’ No.’s 1 through 6 hitters went 11-for-12 with 6 RBIs against Nicasio. Overall, Pedroia led the charge going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while Ellsbury, Nava and Iglesias also had three hits in the win. In all, the team combined for 20 hits, a season-high.

“Outstanding performance, anytime you get 20 hits it’s a very good night,” said manager John Farrell. “I think early on we found some holes with some base hits that weren’t squared up, then, combined with balls that were squared up. I think [Pedroia] with a few base hits the other way and a couple of RBIs, just up and down the lineup a very good overall approach against their guys on the mound. Jose [Iglesias] three hits once again continues to swing a hot bat for us.”

Ryan Dempster gave the Sox another quality start. The right-hander went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six. Alex Wilson relieved Dempster and gave up two runs (one earned) in 2/3 of an inning before Craig Breslow and Pedro Beato combined to pitch a scoreless 2 1/3 innings to finish off the win.

The teams will be right back at it Wednesday afternoon (4:05, NESN) where John Lackey will toe the rubber for the Sox and will go against veteran Roy Oswalt, making his second start of the season.

What they’ll be saying: The Red Sox needed a game like this coming off of a tough weekend series in Detroit. All nine Sox starters recorded at least one hit for the second time this season. They also had six players reach base at least three times, their most in a 9-inning game since September of 2011. Iglesias extended his on-base streak to 27 games which is the longest by a Red Sox player since Pedroia’s 37-gamer in 2011 … Dempster continued his recent success with his sixth straight quality start dating back to May 28. It has been a matter of getting run support as in half of his starts he’s received two runs or less, but when getting four runs or more of support he is 4-0 in five starts.
