Harvey, Cano lead New York names selected to All-Star Game

The 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field doesn’t have the usual crush of New York stars, but all eyes will be on one name as the week progresses.

Mets starter Matt Harvey was unsurprisingly named as one of the pitchers in the NL, but whether he will be the starter likely won’t be known for a few days.  That will be the decision of manager Bruce Bochy of defending World Series champion San Francisco.

Harvey is 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA and a league-leading 141 strikeouts in 123 innings.

The Mets also have to make a decision on whether Harvey will even be eligible to pitch next Tuesday. He is scheduled to pitch on Sunday, meaning he would be unable to go in the All-Star Game. The team may shuffle the rotation to get him the start in Queens.

Harvey will be joined by David Wright, who was voted as the NL starter at third base. There was no repeat of last year when Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval overtook Wright in the final vote total.

Wright is batting .305 with a .396 on-base percentage, 13 home runs, 43 RBIs and 47 runs scored. It is Wright’s seventh All-Star appearance and fifth time as a starter.

Across town in the Bronx, the Yankees will be sending a much smaller contingent than usual.

Robinson Cano was voted the starter at second base in the AL. He is the only position player from the Yankees. He has made five All-Star Game appearances, including a current streak of four in a row.

“It feels great. I want to thank God and the fans that dedicated their time to vote for me to start this year’s All-Star Game,” Cano said in a statement. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. There’s a lot of great second basemen in the American League, and I am thankful to the fans for voting and appreciating the way that I’ve been playing this year. It makes it that much more special that the game and the events surrounding it are being held here in New York City.”

Cano is batting .293 with a .372 OBP, 20 home runs, 58 RBIs and 50 runs scored.

Mariano Rivera will also be heading to the All-Star Game from the Yankees in his final season before retirement.

“It’s wonderful to be named an All-Star again, especially with the game being here in New York,” Rivera said in a statement. “New York fans are the best and they deserve it. I know that they will put on a great show and hopefully we’ll do a good job.”

Rivera will be making an incredible 13th appearance in the game. He has a 1.39 ERA, 30 strikeouts and 29 saves in 32 1/3 innings.

Rivera could be joined by bullpen-mate David Robertson, who is among the AL Final Vote candidates. Robertson picked up his 20th hold Saturday and has a 2.29 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. The Final Vote will be held through Thursday on MLB.com.
