Shaun Marcum’s Mets career didn’t even last until the All-Star break.

The Mets pitcher will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, according to assistant general manager John Ricco. Marcum will undergo the surgery due to thoracic outlet syndrome, which causes excess pressure on the nerves in his shoulder. He was having trouble gripping a baseball with numbness in his right hand.

He could begin throwing again in about two months, but the Mets have decided it’s not worth rushing him back for what would be just a brief cameo at the end of the season at best.

Marcum was placed on the 15-day disabled list July 7 and was examined by team doctors on Monday. There was the possibility of a non-surgical option, but Marcum and the team decided surgery was best.

Carlos Torres, who had been pitching out of the bullpen, will take Marcum’s spot in the rotation. Torres was 6-3 with a 3.89 ERA in hitter-friendly Triple-A Las Vegas as a starter.

Marcum is 1-10 with a 5.29 ERA this season.

The Mets signed Marcum as a free agent before the season, but he dealt with injury most of the season. The shoulder issues caused a marked dip in velocity. Marcum was never a hard thrower, but his average fastball this season was just 85.3 mph, down from 86.5 mph last season with Milwaukee and 87.1 mph in 2010 with Toronto. His cutter was also down 1.2 mph versus last season.
