Report: Alex Rodriguez could return to Yankees next week

Like it or not, the return of Alex Rodriguez could come as soon as next Monday.

ESPN reports, in a conversation with general manager Brian Cashman, that the third baseman is on schedule in his rehab assignment and will likely be activated from the disabled list during the Texas series, which begins Monday.

“That’s the hope,” Cashman told ESPN Wednesday. “We’ll see through the weekend. We started the 20-day rehab once we felt he could complete the 20 days and be available to us in Texas. So let’s get through the weekend and see where he is at and see if he is major league able.”

Rodriguez’s 20-day rehab stint will run out on Monday.

The Yankees promoted Rodriguez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, where he will continue his rehab after spending the last two days with Double-A Trenton. Rodriguez was 2-for-7 in Trenton with a home run Monday night.

On the whole, however, his rehab stint has not been particularly impressive. He is batting just 5-for-28 (.179) with one walk and seven strikeouts in 10 games between Single-A and Double-A.

Yankee third basemen, most recently manned by Luis Cruz, have struggled badly this season. Cruz is batting just .150 this season, while David Adams was recently sent down after batting .190 in 35 games.

Rodriguez also still has the Biogenesis scandal and a possibly lengthy suspension hanging over his head. He recently spoke with MLB about the investigation into the Miami-area clinic which reportedly supplied performance-enhancing drugs to a variety of MLB players, including Rodriguez and former NL MVP Ryan Braun.

Commissioner Bud Selig spoke during the All-Star break and said the investigation was still ongoing, but reports indicate suspensions are likely to be handed down soon. MLBPA Executive Director Michael Weiner said on Tuesday that he expects the findings to be presented to the union “within the next month.”

The union will likely appeal the suspensions, though, meaning the bans might not be served until next season if upheld.
