Red Sox fall behind early, offense erupts for 15 runs in come-from-behind win

After knuckleballer Steven Wright allowed three runs, hit a batter, walked two, uncorked a wild pitch and catcher Ryan Lavarnway allowed four passed balls in the first inning things didn’t look so good for the Red Sox, but like they have of late, the Sox never gave up and rallied for a 15-10 rout of the Astros Tuesday night in Houston. With their 69th win the Red Sox matched their win total from last season and still have 47 games left to play.

Trailing 3-0 after one, 5-0 after two, and even 7-3 after four, the Red Sox rallied and scored five runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, as well as two more in the seventh to eventually run away with the win. Jacoby Ellsbury led the offense with two home runs and four runs scored. David Ortiz had a good night as well going 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Jonny Gomes (4 RBIs) also homered for the Sox, his fourth pinch-hit home run of the season. Shane Victorino contributed three hits in the win.

Making his first career major league start, it was a night to forget for Wright as a rough first inning forced him from the game. Things didn’t get much better as Brandon Workman allowed six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief, but the Red Sox offense bailed him out with all the runs in the middle frames. Drake Britton came on for Workman and went 2 1/3 innings allowing one run on one hit, a solo homer in the eighth inning, snapping his scoreless streak to begin his major league career. Rubby De La Rosa pitched a 1-2-3 ninth in his major league debut to close out the win.

The teams will conclude their three-game set Wednesday night (8:10, NESN) where Ryan Dempster will take on Jarred Cosart.

What they’ll be saying: As has been the case for the Red Sox the entire season they never quit and Tuesday night was no exception, as they scored ten runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a five-run deficit after two innings. It was the 26th come-from-behind win for the Sox this season, which means over a third of their wins have been in come-from-behind fashion … It clearly wasn’t the start from Wright the team had hoped for. It will be interesting to see what the team does with him now,  as they can send him back to the bullpen or even down to Pawtucket. Workman was to be considered the teams’ sixth starter, but manager John Farrell has said the plan is to pitch him out of the bullpen the rest of the year.
