Rookie quarterback Geno Smith was in action for the Jets’ first practice since he injured his ankle in Friday’s preseason debut.

He had a noticeable limp, but was not limited in any of the team’s drills.

“Obviously the ankle isn’t full strength right now, but I felt pretty good out there,” Smith said. “I was limping a little bit. It’s just something that you’ve got to work past, you’ve got to get through. I felt pretty good.”

Smith saw his first NFL action Friday, but his time was limited due to the injury. He went 6-of-7 for 47 yards.

The QB competition didn’t get much clearer after one game, with Mark Sanchez throwing an interception for a touchdown on his first series, but bouncing back nicely with a scoring drive. Head coach Rex Ryan, who said on Friday he hadn’t been paying much attention to Smith, backtracked yesterday, but had no definitive answer on who would be starting heading into Week 2 of the preseason. Last week, Ryan indicated Smith would start.

“I’m not going to get into the specifics, but obviously there could be some factors that change the original thought,” Ryan said. “We’ll see as we get closer.”

The second preseason game will be Aug. 17 against the Jaguars.

Smith said he thought it was important to be out on the field, even not at full strength, due to the on-going competition between he and Sanchez.

“I felt it was important just to practice,” Smith said. “You can’t miss a day of practice. I pride myself on being out there at all times and one little ankle injury wasn’t going to keep me from practicing and competing with my teammates.”

Smith underwent an MRI and X-rays, both of which he said came back negative.
