Phillies fall to Atlanta in series finale

The Phillies were attempting to win their second series since the mid-July All-Star break when they took the field in Atlanta Wednesday night.

It didn’t happen.

The Braves beat the Phillies for the second straight night, 6-3.

Domonic Brown hit his 27th home run of the season for the Phillies in the sixth inning, a two-run shot off Braves starter Brandon Beachy, but the Braves were already out to a 5-0 lead at that point.

Jason Heyward led off the game with a home run, his 11th of the year. Chris Johnson added a sacrifice fly later in the first to get the Braves out to an early 2-0 lead.

Phillies starting pitcher John Lannan left the game in the second inning with an injury. He had given up four hits and five runs, with three walks and one strikeout, in just 1 1/3 innings of work.

Beachy got the win, going  six innings and allowing just the two runs on Brown’s home run. He’s now 2-0 on the year in his comeback from elbow surgery.

Darin Ruf continued to enjoy a power surge, hitting his seventh home run of the season in the ninth inning off relief pitcher David Carpenter.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez then called on his closer, Craig Kimbrel, to close out the game. Kimbrel did just that, picking up his 28th consecutive save and 38th of the year.
