Lee dominant as Phillies top Mets

 

Just hours after the New York Mets learned their young ace is likely heading for Tommy John surgery, the Phillies’ ace quickly reminded them what they’ll be missing over the next year or so.

Cliff Lee allowed just one run on five hits over eight innings in the Phillies’ 2-1 win in Flushing Monday night. He struck out seven Mets hitters.

It was Lee’s first win since July 5. He improved his record on the year to 11-6.

Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, who started the All-Star Game for the National League, is likely going to need Tommy John surgery to repair a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right, pitching elbow. The injury was revealed in an MRI Monday morning.

The Mets scored their lone run of the game on an Andrew Brown RBI single in the second inning. Brown drove in Marlon Byrd, who hit a leadoff double.

Lee cruised the rest of the way, outdueling the Mets’ other impressive young pitcher, Zach Wheeler.

Rookie third baseman Cody Asche put the Phillies ahead to stay in the fourth with his two-out, two-run triple. It was the first triple of his career.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his 22nd save in 28 tries.
