Victorino powers Red Sox over Orioles in blowout win

BOSTON — The Red Sox had only played three of their last 17 games at home prior to Tuesday night and by the way they swung the bats you could tell they were awakened playing back at home as they homered three times in an 14-hit attack, including seven for extra-bases in their 13-2 blowout win over the Orioles.

Every Red Sox player reached base in the win, which saw the Sox turn a 2-1 deficit going into the bottom of the third into an 11-2 lead by the end of the fifth. Shane Victorino led the offense with a monster night, reaching base all five times, going 3-for-3, with two home runs, a double, scoring four times and driving in a career-high seven. Mike Napoli also hit a mammoth home run, well over the Green Monster leading off the fourth inning. Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury each had three hits, while Will Middlebrooks added two in the win.

“I don’t think you could do any better,” manager John Farrell said of Victorino’s night. “He was on base all five times, seven RBI, a couple of home runs and a couple of very nice plays in right field. He and Dustin set the tone offensively at the top of the order and in addition to that Felix [Doubront] put together another strong start.”

Doubront, aside from a rough third inning, dominated the Orioles going 6 2/3 innings allowing just two runs (both in the third inning) on four hits while striking out seven, the most for him since May 26. He could have went deeper into the game, but being at 111 pitches Farrell took him out with two outs in the seventh. Matt Thornton recorded the final out in the seventh before Drake Britton pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to close out the game.

The teams will continue their three-game series tomorrow night (7:10, NESN) where John Lackey will go up against Bud Norris.

What they’ll be saying: The star of the game was obviously Victorino, whose seven RBI were the most in a game by a Red Sox player since J.D. Drew had seven back in June of 2007 against the Diamondbacks. He leads the Red Sox with seven homers in the month of August and is hitting .444 with nine extra-base hits and and 11 RBI in his last nine games … Doubront continues to impress this season picking up his 10th win of the year. Since May 16, he’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in 18 of 19 starts and has posted an ERA of 2.99 during that span … While it was a big win for the Sox, the team continues to take it one day at a time and refuses to look ahead at anything coming up down the stretch.
